Ceiling Repair in Ottawa
A ceiling tells you something is wrong before a wall does, because gravity and moisture both work in your favour as a diagnostician. The repair itself is rarely the hard part — finding out why it happened usually is, and skipping that step is how people end up paying twice.
$215–$540 for most single-ceiling repairs
Common problems we fix
What actually turns up on these calls in Ottawa homes, and what each one really means.
Hairline cracks radiating from a light fixture
Almost always movement rather than structure. The box is fixed to a joist, the board around it is not, and seasonal humidity swings do the rest. Re-taped and feathered wide, they stay closed.
A long straight crack following a seam
The joint tape has released. Cutting the old tape out and re-taping is the only durable fix — filling it with compound alone puts you back here next winter.
Brown or yellow water rings
The stain is evidence, not the problem. Roof, plumbing above, or a bathroom fan venting into the attic instead of outside — that last one is extremely common in Ottawa and it drips condensation right back onto the ceiling.
The ceiling is sagging between joists
Board that has taken on moisture and lost its stiffness. This one does not get patched; the affected sheet comes out and gets replaced, because a sagging ceiling is a weight problem, not a cosmetic one.
Nail pops in a row
Fasteners backing out as framing dries. They get driven, backed with a screw beside them, and the dimple filled in three passes.
How the work is done
-
1
Find the cause
Moisture meter on anything stained. No repair starts until we know the water has stopped.
-
2
Cut back to solid
Compromised board removed rather than covered.
-
3
Patch and tape
Backed patch, taped joints, three coats feathered wide.
-
4
Seal and prime
Shellac-based stain block on water damage, then primer so the paint does not flash.
What it costs
A single crack or small patch is usually $215–$360. Water-damaged sections that need board replaced run $420–$840. Stain sealing is included; repainting the full ceiling is quoted separately because a spot repair rarely blends on an older painted surface.

Why does my ceiling crack every winter?
Ottawa's indoor humidity swings hard between seasons. Framing moves, and any joint that was under-taped shows it first. A properly re-taped joint accommodates that movement; a filled one does not.
Can you match my textured ceiling?
Usually. Stipple and knockdown textures can be matched closely enough that a repair is invisible from standing height. A perfect match under direct light is not always achievable, and we will say so before starting.
Do I need to repaint the whole ceiling?
Often yes, on an older painted ceiling. Paint fades and yellows, so a fresh patch reads as a bright square even when the repair itself is flawless. On a recently painted ceiling, spot work usually blends.
