Drywall Patch & Repair in Ottawa
Drywall repair is judged entirely on whether you can see it afterwards. Anyone can fill a hole; the difference is in how wide the compound is feathered and how flat it is sanded, because a repair that is technically sound but visible under window light has not really been finished.
$180–$360 per patch, sanded, primed and painted
Common problems we fix
What actually turns up on these calls in Ottawa homes, and what each one really means.
Doorknob holes and impact damage
A backed patch — a piece of board cut to fit with a backer strip behind it — not mesh tape stretched over a void. Mesh over an unsupported hole flexes, and it telegraphs a square outline through the paint within a season.
Settling cracks at corners and seams
Most common call in newer subdivisions, and it is cosmetic. The house is doing what houses do in the first decade. Old tape out, new tape in, three coats.
Anchor holes and picture-hanging damage
Dozens of small holes from a move-out are a different job than one large hole — faster per hole, but the whole wall usually needs a light skim so the repairs do not read as a constellation of bumps.
Water-damaged board
Soft or stained drywall comes out. Compound over wet board will fail and it can hide a mould problem behind a nice finish.
Old lath and plaster
Common in Centretown, the Glebe, Sandy Hill and Old Ottawa South. Plaster cracks in a coarser pattern than drywall and needs a bonding agent and a slower build — it is not a drywall repair with a different name.
How the work is done
-
1
Cut square
Damage cut back to a clean rectangle with solid edges.
-
2
Back and fill
Backer strip, patch cut to fit tight, screwed rather than glued.
-
3
Three coats
Tape coat, fill coat, finish coat — each one wider than the last.
-
4
Sand and prime
Sanded flat, checked under raking light, primed so paint does not flash on bare compound.
What it costs
Single patches typically run $180–$360 including prime and paint. Multiple patches in one room are cheaper per patch — the setup and the drying time are shared. Full-wall skim coating is quoted by square footage.

How much does drywall repair cost in Ottawa?
Most single patches land between $180 and $360 finished. The variables are size, whether the wall is textured, and whether the ceiling is involved — overhead work takes longer. See our Ottawa rate card for a full breakdown by job type.
How long before I can paint?
Compound needs to dry fully between coats, so a three-coat repair usually spans two visits or one long day. Rushing paint onto compound that is still damp is how you get flashing and shrinkage cracks.
Will the repair be invisible?
On a flat wall, yes. On a textured wall, close — texture matching is a craft and the match is judged from standing height rather than six inches away. We will tell you honestly which one you are getting.
