Laminate & Vinyl Plank Floor Repair in Ottawa
Laminate and vinyl plank fail in ways that look catastrophic and usually are not. A swollen seam or a lifting board can generally be dealt with in place, swapping the affected planks rather than pulling up the room — provided somebody kept the offcuts.
$215–$505 for a typical board replacement job
Common problems we fix
What actually turns up on these calls in Ottawa homes, and what each one really means.
Boards are swollen at the seams
Water got in and the core expanded. Those planks do not recover and get replaced. The important part is finding where the water came from — dishwasher, fridge line, a boot tray by the door — because the replacements will do the same thing.
The floor is lifting or peaking in the middle
Almost always an expansion gap problem. The floor was laid tight to the wall, and when it expanded it had nowhere to go but up. Trimming the perimeter gap under the baseboard usually lays it flat again.
Planks have separated leaving a visible gap
The click joint has released, often after furniture was dragged across it. Tapped back together and, where the joint has been damaged, replaced.
The floor squeaks or feels hollow underfoot
Subfloor or underlay issue rather than a flooring issue. Worth diagnosing before replacing boards that are not the problem.
A few boards are chipped or scratched through
Individual replacement is possible mid-floor. Colour matching an older discontinued product is the limiting factor, not the labour.
How the work is done
-
1
Find the cause
Especially for swelling — replacing wet boards without stopping the water is a repeat visit.
-
2
Lift what is needed
Baseboard off, planks unclicked back to the damaged area rather than cutting where possible.
-
3
Replace and reset
New or salvaged planks in, floor re-clicked, expansion gap corrected.
-
4
Reinstall trim
Baseboard and quarter round back on, caulked and touched up.
What it costs
Small repairs of a few boards run $215–$335. Larger water-damaged areas or jobs requiring the floor to be worked back from a wall land $360–$505. If you have leftover planks from the original install, keep them — matching is the expensive part.

Can you replace one damaged plank in the middle of a floor?
Yes. Either by unclicking back to it or by cutting the plank out and glue-setting a replacement. Both work; the first is cleaner if the run is short.
What if I do not have matching planks?
We can often source a close match, or take planks from inside a closet or under an appliance and put the mismatched ones there instead. That trick saves a lot of floors.
Will swollen laminate go back down if it dries?
No. Once the core has expanded the damage is permanent. Anyone who tells you otherwise is hoping.
