Grab Bar & Bathroom Safety Installation in Ottawa
A grab bar is only as good as what it is screwed into. This is the one job on this list where a bad installation is worse than no installation at all, because a bar that pulls out of the wall is grabbed at exactly the moment somebody is already falling. It gets fixed into blocking, framing or a proper masonry anchor — never into drywall plugs.
$130–$230 per bar, installed into structure
Common problems we fix
What actually turns up on these calls in Ottawa homes, and what each one really means.
There is no framing where the bar needs to go
Bathroom studs rarely align with where a bar is actually useful. The answer is a solid backing plate or a toggle-style anchor rated for the load, chosen for the wall type — not a compromise on placement.
The wall is tiled
Drilling tile without cracking it needs the right bit, low speed and no hammer action. Holes get sealed so water cannot track into the substrate behind.
You are not sure where the bar should go
Placement depends on the person, not the bathroom. We will ask who is using it, watch how they get in and out, and set height and angle to that rather than to a standard diagram.
A previous bar has come loose
Almost always a plug-anchor installation. The old holes get repaired properly and the new bar goes into something that will hold.
You need more than a bar
Raised toilet seats, shower seats, handrails on stairs and threshold ramps are all the same visit and the same principle — anchored into structure and tested with real force.
How the work is done
-
1
Assess the user
Height, reach and which side they lead with. This determines placement more than the room does.
-
2
Find structure
Framing located, or a backing solution selected for the wall build-up.
-
3
Drill and seal
Tile drilled cleanly, penetrations sealed against moisture.
-
4
Load test
Full body weight applied before we leave, in front of you.
What it costs
A single grab bar is $130–$180 into framing, $170–$230 where backing or specialty anchors are needed. Multiple bars in one visit drop to around $100 each after the first. Hardware supplied by you or sourced at cost.

Can a grab bar be installed if there is no stud where I need it?
Yes, with the right approach — either opening the wall to add blocking, or using a load-rated toggle system suited to the wall construction. What should never happen is moving the bar somewhere less useful because it was easier to fix there.
How much weight will it hold?
Properly installed into framing, a standard bar is rated well beyond body weight. We test it in front of you with full weight applied so you are not taking our word for it.
Do you install other mobility fittings?
Handrails, shower seats, raised toilet seats and threshold ramps, yes. Anything involving lifts or structural modification is a different trade.
